Parts of speech

 
In grammar, a part of speech is a linguistic category of words.
In English there are eight parts of speech.
 
1. NOUN
A noun is a naming word. It may be a name of a person, a place or a thing or an idea. It is also known as “subject” in a sentence.
Example: a boy, John, a village, Madurai, a car, a lion, freedom, happiness
 
2. PRONOUN
A pronoun is a word which is used in the place of a noun or noun phrase.
Example: I, we, you, he, she, it, they
 
3. VERB
A verb is a word used to refer to an action or a state of being
Example: go, write, exist, be, is, are, was
 
4. ADVERB
An adverb is used to modify a verb, adjective and other adverbs. It also gives
More meaning to the verb of the sentence in relation to manner, place, reason,
Consequence or result
Example: slowly, completely, never, there, always...
 
5. ADJECTIVE
An adjective is a word used to describe or modify a noun or pronoun.
Example: Good girl, beautiful building, nice song,
 
6. PREPOSITION
Preposition is word used before nouns to form a phrase that shows where, when,
How and why an action takes place
Example: in, above, to, for, at, of, behind...
 
7. CONJUNCTION
Conjunctions are words used to join words or clauses or sentences.
Example: and, but, So, If, Though, Although, when...
 
8. INTERJECTION
Interjections are words used to express sudden feeling or emotion.
Example: oh!, Alas, Oh My God !
