Sentence pattern

SENTENCE PATTERN

 

There are five important components in a sentence.

·         SUBJECT – It shows who or what is doing the action. It is always some form of noun or pronoun.

·        VERB       – It shows the action or the state of being. It can be an action verb, like “run,” or a state verb, like “seem.”

·        OBJECT                – The word which receives the action from the subject is the object of the sentence. it gives answer for “what” (or) “whom”. What is for “things” and whom is for “person”.

A)     DIRECT OBJECT     – The phrase or word which answers the question “what” .

B)     INDIRECT OBJECT – The phrase or word answers the question “to whom”

·        ADJUNCT          –it gives answer for the questions when,where,why,how/it is the second information of the sentence

·        COMPLEMENT      – The word or phrase completes the meaning of a sentence,it gives more information about the subject,usually comes after “BE form” verbs. Proffessional or career, colours, adjectives are mostly complement.

It comes after main verbs like “Become, elected, feel, grew, get, seems, made, etc…”

If the complement tells us about the subject is called subject complement.

EG: Ravi is a doctor.  [Doctor – tell about the subject]

If the complement tells us about the object is called object complement.

EG: We named him Hari. [it tells about the object]

 

EXAMPLES:

1)     S+V

·        She writes

·        Birds fly

·        Mom is cooking

·        Sandeep will go

 

2)     S+V+O

·        She tells a story.

·        Rani washes the clothes.

·        They play football.

·        The mason builds the house.

 

3) S+V+O+A

* Students are filling the form slowly.

* Vijaya draws the picture very beautifully.

* Sumathi received a letter yesterday.

* We bought a book in chennai.

* Mason did not complete the work due to rain.

 

4) S+V+A

* Students performed beautifully.

* I went to America.

* I jog in the evening.

* Flights were delayed due to rain.

* Tailor stitched properly.

 

 

 

5) S+V+C

* She is a doctor.

* The actor turned politician.

* We felt sorry.

* It looks beautiful

* Maggi tastes awesome.

 

6) S+V+O+C

* Reading made him a complete man.

* We appointed him as a leader.

* I want my coffee hot.

* They named the child Rita.

* We painted  the car red.

 

7) S+V+IO+DO

* We sent them a gift.

* The teacher teaches us the grammar.

* He gave me a pen.

* He showed him a picture.

* We presented her a gift.

 

8)S+V+DO+IO

* The manager gave the bonus to the workers.

* The teacher presented an experiment to the teacher.

* My father bought a pen to me.

* The cow gives milk to the calf.

* The government awarder the prises to the winners.

 

Questions to be solved:

          Velu became tired after the match.

          I met my friend.

          The shoe is large.

          Go there.

          Open the book

          They told him a story.

          Yesterday my brother killed a snake.

          Sam ia a lawyer.

          Theycorrect the errors immediately.

          We selected them on merit.
