PHRASAL VERBS
 
A phrasal verb is a combination of words (a verb + a preposition or verb +adverb) that when used together, usually take on a different meaning to that of the original verb.
Phrasal verbs are phrases that indicate actions.
 
Phrasal verbs we use daily are listed below:

  6. Call on                                      – visit                                     – The DEO called on our school yesterday.
  7. Call off                                    – cancel                                  – The meeting was called off.
  8. Come at                        – attack                                  – The robbers tried to come at me.
  9. Come about                 – happen                                – The accident came about yesterday.
  10. Come after                  – follow                                  – Don’t come after me.
  11. Deal with                     – manage                               – He cleverly dealt with the situation.
  12. Figure out                    – make out, understand         – I can’t make out your point.
  13. Get through                  – complete                            – He got through the exam with flying colors.
  14. Get on with                 – handle                                 – How do you get on with your friends?
  15. Get away                      – escape                                 – The robbers got away with the money.
  16. Get over                      –over come                               She got over her illness.
  17. Get on                                      – board something                 – Kindly get on the bus.
  18. Give back                     – return                                  – I will give back this pen tomorrow.
  19. Give in                          – yield, surrender                  – Finally the enemies gave in.
  20. Give away                   – distribute                             – The chief guest gave away the prizes.
  21. Give up                        – abandon                              – He gave up the project.
  22. Go against                    – violate                                 – His action goes against our rules.
  23. Go up                           – increase                              – Food prices have gone up this year.
